Before you can even dream about getting signed to a record label, you first need to create the all important demo. Putting together a demo requires serious thought and effort because this is what a talent scout is going to be judging you on. You need to choose at least two of your absolute best songs. Best songs doesn’t necessarily mean your most popular songs. Think about the lyrics, the composition, the format. If you own a Mac, you can easily figure out how to record some of your songs yourself. But if you can afford professional studio time, it’ll be well worth the money.
Don’t bother recording an entire album’s worth. No one is going to want to listen to it, except the fans of course. Keep it to two or three tracks. Practice the songs numerous times at home before hitting the studio so you don’t waste time and money. If recording at home, don’t fret over it not being perfect. As long as your talent shines through, that’s all that matters.
